After an initial discussion in a closed and fairly stuffy conference room, we joined Leeway House residents in their common area for several games of bingo underneath an enormous skylight. Becky began by giving the residents an opportunity to speak. Most of them were eager to do so. They were universally effusive in their praise for the Leeway House and its staff. Several stressed that there needs to be more centers like it available to the people of Connecticut (not to mention the rest of the United States). One man said that he had to travel across the state to reach the Leeway House, since there is nothing remotely comparable near where he lives. From their speeches, it was shocking to learn how long many of these residents have lived with AIDS. Three or four I kind of have to agree with BostonGirl. I can’t count how many times I’ve fallen head over heels for women guitarists. It’s just so natural to do so when you see the amazing way they can handle the most phallic instrument. But I’ve also learned that once that guitar is out of their hand,Proxy - Proxy

people mentioned the duration of their infection, and all had had the disease for twenty or more years. One of the women said that when she learned she was HIV-positive in 1984, her life expectancy was only five years. (Yesterday, Dr. Danworth referred to a 21-year-old patient of his that was born with HIV.)
I’ve been waiting for the next book in the 1632 series to come out for a long time. This alternate history series set in Europe during the 100-years war is one of the best examples of a fully-realized alternate version of history.

Here is Amazon’s description: “The Baltic War which began in the novel 1633 is still raging, and the time-lost Americans of Grantville-the West Virginia town hurled back into the seventeenth century by a mysterious cosmic accident-are caught in the middle of it. Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden and Emperor of the United States of Europe, prepares a counter-attack on the combined forces of France, Spain, England, and Denmark-former enemies which have allied in the League of Ostend to destroy the threat to their power that the Americans represent-which are besieging the German city of Luebeck.
Before these speeches began, I noticed a middle-aged, heavyset woman sitting at one of the tables, a fan pointed directly at her and blowing in her scarred and partially flushed face. Since she was by herself, and most of the other residents had plenty of med students around them, I began to make my way over to her table. But as I went, Michelle, one of the 2nd year student coordinators, beckoned me over to her table. Suddenly fearful that perhaps there was a reason this woman was by herself - perhaps she had declined company - I accepted Michelle’s invitation. Later, I would feel guilty for not following through with my intention.
